Christelle Louis – 2nd Year Rachelle Mathurin - 2nd Year
Christelle Louis

Christelle is on the Dean's List for her impressive academic performance. She recently earned an A+ in Accounting and is active with numerous community service projects.

Haiti Background

  • Top Performer - top group in HS, top of class in post HS classes (BIWI).
  • Language – Creole, French, English, Spanish.
  • Leadership Spirited, highly motivated, dynamic, socially committed.
  • Passion - takes pleasure in working with people and delivering excellent work, with an impressive track record of doing so prior to becoming a Scholar. Has a passion for Haiti and is looking forward to playing a key role in its future upon her return. Passing the torch means leading by helping for Christelle and that is exactly what she plans on doing at school and when she gets back to Haiti.
Rachelle Mathurin

Rachelle was inducted into the honor society, earned a straight A report card this Spring semester (for the second consecutive period), and received the Circle of Excellence award.

Haiti Background
  • Top Performer - excelled in school (skipped several grades), overcame challenging childhood circumstances with exceptionally strong character.
  • Language – Creole, French, English, Spanish.
  • Leadership Spirited, highly motivated, disciplined, focused ambition.
  • Passion - writing, languages and people. Wants to lead by teaching and plans to volunteer while at school. Focused on teaching in some form when she returns to Haiti. Rachelle has a passion for her country and its people that is sure to light the way for many more leaders to come.

Rachelle and Christelle are currently attending Berea College. They started school in September of 2007. Upon graduation, they will return to Haiti to fulfill their 2-year commitment of applying their education and training to fueling the economic growth of Haiti. Berea College took the lead in opening their arms to Le Flambeau scholars with much success. Additional schools are on board. The next class of scholars will begin in September of 2010.


Scholarship Requirements

Scholarship Type:
  • Awarding 4 -Year college scholarships at U.S. institutions to students in Haiti.
  • Major must be in Agriculture, Engineering or International Commerce.
  • Scholarships cover tuition, room & board, and transportation (Haiti/U.S.).
  • Selected Scholars are required to make a $1,000 U.S. contribution.
Scholarship Requirements:
  • Haitian citizen with a H.S. GPA of 2.7 or better (U.S. 4pt. system or equivalent) – candidates must be Haitians living in Haiti, must have completed H.S. and must be under the age of 25 years.
  • TOEFL IBT* Test Score of 75 or better - applicants must take the TOEFL test and meet required score in order to request an application. 
  • Interview In Haiti – interested applicants must complete an interview with the designated representative in Haiti – must bring TOEFL score results for review.
  • Application – application packet will be provided upon successful completion of the interview.  An essay describing the applicant’s passion for learning and for giving back to Haiti, is required.  Notarized H.S. grade transcripts and 3 written references are to be included with the application.
  • Leadership –applicants must demonstrate strong leadership qualities. 
  • Economically Challenged – applicant must be economically challenged and unable to meet cost requirements of earning a college education.
  • Selection of Scholars – scholarship recipients are selected by the Le Flambeau scholarship committee.  Award announcements are made in April/May.
  • Return to Help Haiti – scholars must commit to return to Haiti upon graduation and devote a minimum of 2 years working on initiatives that drive economic growth for Haiti.
